Our Lady of Guadalupe

Our Lady of Guadalupe is an Aztec form of the Virgin Mary, and is one of the most popular. She appeared in four visions to an Aztec farmer in the year 1531, just ten years after the Spanish took power in Mexico.  Her words, from a 17th century text, were:  "...I wish that a temple be erected here quickly, so I may therein exhibit and give all my love, compassion, help, and protection, because I am your merciful mother, to you, and to all the inhabitants on this land..."  To let the poor farmer prove himself to a Bishop, she performed a miracle and made her image appear on a cloth, which is still preserved and worshipped at the cathedral in Guadalupe to this day.

Theresa Of Avila

When she was 43 years old, St. Therese of Avila decided to create a new order of nuns dedicated to a life of poverty and prayer. For St. Therese, the contemplative life was a loving, even fun vocation. Therese said "May God protect me from gloomy saints." On day, when one of the Sisters found her about to eat an especially sumptuous meal and scolded her for the lack of poverty is showed , she answered "There's a time for partridge and a time for penance."

She was ordered to write her life story by the church. She described her divine visions, and the church decided that they were real experiences, granted her by God. In spite of this approval, she was a very controversial figure. The Pope called her "a restless disobedient gadabout. " When a convent elected her as the prioress, the head of the Carmelites excommunicated every nun who lived there. In 1970 she was declared a Doctor of the Church for her writing.

Saint Joan of Arc 

Joan of Arc was a visionary. When she was just a young girl, she had visions of angels. She was overwhelmed by the experience. She ran away from home many times to go to the church to pray, sometimes spending the night there in passionate and fervent prayer. When She was older, her visions changed. She began to see a light, from which the voice of God would speak to her. That voice told her to serve her monarch, the Dauphin of France, who had not yet been crowned as king. By tradition, this could only happen in the cathedral at Orleans, a city that was held by the army of England. The people knew of a prophecy in which a maiden would lead their people to freedom. Taking St. Joan to be that maiden, they followed her call to arms. The army she raised took the city, and the Dauphin was crowned king. Her story ends with her capture by the English, who brought her before the Inquisition. She was found guilty of witchcraft and burned at the stake.

ODIN -The Norse Collection - The Helm of Awe

The Helm of Awe (Old Norse Ægishjálmr) is a type of rune stave - a magical spell of protection used by early Vikings. It is one of the most mysterious and powerful symbols in Norse mythology.
