Known as the Medicine or Healing Buddha, Bhaisajyaguru is said to dispense spiritual medicine. In his left hand Bhaisajyaguru holds a medicine bowl filled with the healing elixir that transforms all ills. His right hand lies on his lap in medicine mudra.

The laughing Buddha, Hotei, is known for spreading joy and happiness. The items Hotei is carrying are symbols of good fortune. Hotei with a bowl symbolizes the Buddha’s way of life which renounces material possessions to reach enlightenment. Buddha holding a fan symbolizes happiness as the fan “fans away” any worries or troubles. A laughing Buddha carrying a sack or bag symbolizes the Buddha traveling around collecting people’s troubles into a bag and can also be a symbol of wealth and prosperity. Hotei with balls or beads represents ‘pearls of wisdom’ and is also another symbol of wealth.
