Our Blue Velvet design is inspired by a piece of a 15th-century velvet dalmatic. It is decorated in brocaded gilt metal thread with a seven-lobed shield, an artichoke-like botanical shape and tiny floral patterns.

Our Kikka softcover notebook reproduces Michiko Kamee’s “full of chrysanthemum” design originally handpainted with gold overglaze and colour on china by employing Kyo-Satsuma. In this Paperblanks Flexi cover design the viewer can see hints of the kaleidoscope of flowers in bloom, as well as fine boned artistry in every brush stroke and hue.

The Italian Galignani brothers were known for their French Restoration-style bindings, such as the one reproduced here. Originally designed for an 1829 edition of The Poetical Works of Thomas Moore, this gilt-decorated cover retained the structural sturdiness characteristic of the era.

The 1688 edition of L’office de la Semaine Sainte, a Latin liturgical book, was protected by a gold-plated leather binding. Reproduced on our Azure journal with a vibrant blue background, the antique design features an elaborate gilt-edged tendril motif.

This captivating image comes from the first edition of Scottish poet and anthropologist Andrew Lang’s The Violet Fairy Book. Compiled in 1901 by Lang and illustrated by Henry Justice Ford, the book was one in a twelve-part series known as Lang’s Fairy Books, with each book named for the colour of its fairy.

Jean Grolier was among history’s most discerning book collectors, possessing one of the finest private libraries of his time. His “Last Binder” was the Parisian shop that produced most of his later commissions and was responsible for the gold-tooled, brown leather binding recreated here.
